Hollywood couple heads to court over child custody dispute

On Behalf of | Nov 22, 2018 | Child Custody |

Although California is a hotbed for Hollywood celebrity and there are many people who are prominent and in the public eye, most divorces and child custody battles involve “regular” people who do not have their every move documented in the media. However, there is value in examining how family law issues are played out with well-known people to have an idea of what to expect when there is a divorce or child custody dispute for the workaday person. Regardless of whether it is a famous couple or not, having legal assistance is one of the most important aspects of a successful resolution.

The movie stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have had an ongoing dispute regarding their divorce and custody of the six children they share. The case is set to go to court before the end of 2018. The couple is estranged and a retired judge has been named as the temporary judge in the case. He will oversee the pretrial motions, requests and issues. In addition, he will handle the custody case.

Mr. Pitt and Ms. Jolie ended their relationship in the fall of 2016. They had been married for two years, but were together for around a decade. Regarding their children, Mr. Pitt has requested physical custody. Right after they split, he had asked for joint legal and physical custody. Ms. Jolie asserts that Mr. Pitt has been derelict in his duties to pay full child support. He responded by saying he loaned her $8 million to purchase her residence and paid around $1.3 million in expenses for them.

Finances aside, the situation being dealt with by Mr. Pitt and Ms. Jolie largely mirrors those that people are confronted with every day. They want to have custody and visitation with their children; child support is necessary; the atmosphere can grow contentious; and statements regarding fault and the best interests of the children are lobbed back and forth. No matter the situation, having legal assistance is one of the fundamental necessities of a divorce and child custody dispute. A law firm that is experienced in these matters should be contacted from the beginning.
