Divorce mediation: Proper goals will put you on the right track

| Sep 20, 2017 | Blog |

If you decide that divorce is the only way to fix your marital problems, you’ll want to learn more about the mediation process.

There are times when litigation is the only way to work through issues in a divorce, but you don’t want to go down this path until you first give mediation a try.

The key to success with mediation is to get in the right frame of mind from the start. You need to know what you’re trying to accomplish, how to move forward, and the challenges that could arise along the way.

Here are the most common goals of divorce mediation:

  • To create an equitable divorce agreement that both individuals can live with
  • To avoid the time and money that is typically associated with divorce litigation
  • To minimize hostility, which is a must if you will be co-parenting with the other party in the future

You should never assume that divorce mediation will be easy, but many couples find that the right approach puts them in position to work through the process in a timely and efficient manner.

The primary benefit of mediation, as opposed to litigation, is the opportunity for both individuals to have more control over the process. If your case ends up in court, you lose a lot of control to the judge. This can make it difficult to end up in a place that you’re comfortable with.

When it comes to divorce mediation, it makes sense to at least give this a try. If you get in the right frame of mind and are truly willing to make things work, there’s a good chance that you’ll be happy with the end result.

Divorce is never easy, but you might as well do what you can to make the most of this. There is no point in adding more stress to an already difficult situation.
