What are the benefits of divorce mediation?

On Behalf of | Aug 11, 2017 | Divorce Mediation |

The divorce process is often viewed negatively. Many withhold do not file because they are not prepared to deal with the divorce emotional rollercoaster. However, even if spouses in California and other states are not able to communicate well, there are still ways to effectively navigate the process without litigation.

Although, there is nothing wrong with a traditional divorce, through litigation, many seek to reduce the time and costs associated with the process.

Mediation is often overlooked as a viable option for dissolution. Thus, it is important for spouses to consider the benefits this process could offer them.

What are the benefits of divorce mediation? Because of the neutral party involved (the mediator), divorcing couples have more control over the process. The mediator facilitates the conversation, helping them reach agreement. A couple does not need to even speak to each other or be in the same room. A mediator is able to go between the parties, helping them resolve their issues.

And, the mediation process offers confidentiality. In addition, it is likely to take less time when compared to litigation. When couples are able to identify their issues, talk about their needs and come to a mutual resolution, this helps promote a timely divorce decree. And, because it takes less time and no court costs, couples can save around $20,000.

Finally, mediation has the ability to promote a positive post-divorce relationship. While having a relationship with your ex post-divorce is probably the last thing on one’s mind, if one has children or needs that need to be addressed after divorce, having a good relationship with an ex can make these situations easier.

Because nearly half of all marriages end in divorce, it is important to understand all the options. While it is not a pleasant topic, it is a reality. Thus, being aware of one’s rights and options is valuable.
