Some tricks to speed up your divorce

On Behalf of | Mar 15, 2017 | Divorce |

Once you decide that divorce is the only viable option, you want it to be over as soon as possible. Unfortunately, everything you know about divorce informs you that it is expensive, drawn-out, and vitriolic. But, not every divorce has to end in an epic dispute that takes years. This post will go over what you should do to speed up your divorce.

First, research and educate yourself on the legal issues and facts about your marriage. For instance, if your spouse tries to hide the financial information, it could drag out the discovery process for months or even years. So, to head that off, learn about your family’s finances, where you bank and the value of your home.

Additionally, learn about family and divorce law. There are plenty of resources online that can give you the basic contours of what to expect. Many people drag out the divorce process because they are taken off-track by personal disputes. If you know the evidence the court requires and the standards of review, it will keep you focused on what is critical to the divorce process.

Second, talk to your spouse. It sounds counter-intuitive, but open communication about your divorce is the best way to keep it cheap and quick. The more you can collaborate and address outside of the courtroom, the easier it is on the both of you.

Unfortunately, not every marriage can result in an amicable or collaborated divorce. If you know that it isn’t likely to end well, you may want the assistance of an attorney. A lawyer can run interference for you and shield you from the hurtful aspects of the process. You don’t need to go through this alone; an attorney can assist you.
