January is the supposed 'divorce' month

As the calendar rolls over into the new year, many Oakland residents have set new year's resolutions for 2017. Many focus on health and fitness, some want to do a better job managing their money. Others make January the time to end their marriage. Is January really the supposed 'divorce' month?

There are many reasons that January may be the most popular month to divorce. Holidays are over for many in January, as are all the activities and stress that the holidays can bring. January is also a time for new year's resolutions, where Oakland residents make a resolution to improve their life in some way. In addition, it may just feel like the right time to make a change for yourself and your family.

Some of it has to do with property division as well. Certain bonuses or financial benefits may be more favorably dealt with if seeking divorce in January, rather than another time of the year. Obviously, divorce isn't an overnight decision, so some begin the conversation of divorce in January, only to file later in March, for example. Truly, there is never really a convenient time to file for divorce. Certain times may just be more appealing or give a person that extra 'push' to make the big decision.

It is true that January is a month that sees a spike in the number of divorce cases and inquiries. In reality, it is as good a time as any if your marriage is no longer beneficial to you or your spouse. There isn't always one reason that brings a person to the conclusion of divorce. On the contrary, it is many incidents or feelings that bring a person to this life-changing decision.
