Understanding the child support system in Alameda County

Divorce typically deals a hard blow to children. As parents squabble over child custody, spousal support, and child support, children may feel a strange insecurity about who will look after them and pay for their food, clothing, education and toys. What about medical expenses or everyday expenses of the child? These are some of the questions that may haunt children when their parents are planning to break up permanently?

In the United States, child support is often handled by state counties, including Alameda County, California. Child support can be received in three ways. Child support payments can be received through direct deposit, checks sent via mail or electronic payment card or EPC. Electronic Payment Cards work as debit cards and can be used for transactions.

If a person receives support via check, the return address on the envelope will be from the State Disbursement Unit. If there is any address change, then this should be communicated to Alameda County promptly to avoid any delay in payments. If a person expects to receive child support payment through a bank or EPC, then it is important to complete a form available at the SDU. If you have any questions or problems, you can get in touch with the SDU help-desk through the following telephone number - 1-866-901-3212.

If a person is responsible for paying child support, the payments must be sent to the SDU. A person is expected to make the payment before the deadline, otherwise interest will accrue on the last available balance. In cases, where child support payments are made by withholding the payer's paycheck, it is the responsibility of the employer to make the payment to SDU.
