California ranks near the top among states with the highest divorce rates. Among the legal implications following the divorce of a married couple, child support is one of the most important. Ideally, child support is paid by the non-custodial parent to the custodial parent following a legal separation. The amount paid monthly is meant to aid in raising a child, including every day expenses and medical needs, among other things.
Marc Anthony is currently entangled in a child support scuffle with his ex-wife, whom he divorced in 2004. Anthony married the woman in 2000 and has two children with her. In a ruling on Thursday, a judge ordered Anthony to pay an increased amount of money as spousal and child support to his ex-wife. The amount that Anthony now has to pay to his former wife is $ 26,800 per month.
The former wife of the singer claimed that Anthony was negligent with his children in the past year. She alleged that during 2013, Anthony only saw his sons for a total of 35 days.
Citing disregard and neglect, his ex-wife asked the court to raise the original $14,400 spousal and child support amount to a monthly sum of $123,426.
During the star couple’s divorce settlement, Anthony’s ex-wife received the couple’s jointly owned Florida home, as well as two cars. She had also received a vacation fund in the 2004 divorce as part of the financial settlement.
Most cases do not involve the large sums of money that were at issue in Anthony’s case. But, as with any child support dispute, an experienced family law attorney may be able to provide valuable legal advice.
